Frequently Asked Questions

What to wear?Clothing that is not going to restrict your movement (ie. Jeans) Please wear Yoga pants, shorts or loose fitting pants and top. Your stomach does not have to be bared. We dance with bare feet, but if your feet are sensitive you can wear jiffy shoes or socks. You can also wear a hip scarf. This helps you get into the mood and enhances the hips for those shimmies!
Where are classes held and what time?I hold classes in Gladstone and Benaraby. Classes are run during school terms and times are subject to change. Please call/email to confirm times/days/locations.
When should I arrive?Five to ten minutes before the scheduled class time. Give yourself a realistic amount of time for travel, parking and getting changed. It's important to participate in the warm-up to prepare your body for the rest of the class.
What to bring?A water bottle and your sense of fun! Be prepared to have a giggle at yourself and let your worries melt away.
Am I too young/old, unfit, thin/overweight to Belly Dance? You are never too old or too young to dance!! Classes often consist of children as young as 4 and ladies as mature as 75. Everybody's body is perfect for this form of dance. There are no size restrictions. You may find the music, colourful veils enthralling and not feel like exercise at all!
Do I have to show my stomach? Not if you don’t want to. Most students wear t shirts or singlet tops with skirt or pants to class.
What will we be learning? The correct posture for Belly Dance, and the isolations and movements of all parts of the body that make Belly Dance what it is. Over the course of the term we will learn a choreography to complete your Belly Dance Beginner Journey. Do I have to perform in public?Nobody will make you perform if you don’t want to. Many students just enjoy dancing and don’t want to perform. I teach you a choreography that you can dance to in the privacy of your own home or you have the option to perform that dance on our break up night to family and friends. If you wish to perform publicly, then there are plenty of opportunities, but is not a requirement to participate in a Beginner class.
I feel really self-conscious. I’m kind of scared! All you have to be is brave enough to join a class. It’s no different than trying any other new thing, and you might find it as fun and as engaging as thousands of others do. You can do it — all of us did this at some stage, and we love it and have not turned back!
Can I wear a costume to class?Yes, yes, yes.....If you so desire to make (or buy) a costume you are more than welcome to wear it to class. I find it enhances your dance experience.
Do you teach private/semi-private lessons? If you would like a lesson with yourself or with a couple of friends, but don’t want that larger class environment then I can come to you for a class. Charges are $50 and hour for 1 student or $100 for an hour for up to 4 students in your home. Hip scarves are available to borrow.
Do you have Children’s Parties? You can have a Belly Dance or Bollywood themed Birthday Party for your child. Time will vary, this depends on what you were wanting. Suitable for children aged 6 and up. Performance and instruction in Belly Dance/Bollywood as well as use of props such as veils. Bindis will be provided for all child invitees. Gift for the birthday Girl as well as optional hire of hip scarves. A Henna artist can be added for an additional cost.
